Nigerian youth are becoming financial consumers earlier in their lives than ever before and making decisions that can have lasting consequences if not well managed. By the time they are 25 years old, about half of all youth in Nigeria have already joined the labour force. If they are from low-income families, their employment earnings can be key to their own wellbeing as well as that of their families. The financial choices and decisions these young people are forced to make are far reaching.
As there is no personal finance instruction in the Nigerian school curriculum, and without any knowledge of the basic principles of personal finance, we must be proactive about enlightening both parents and their children by introducing practical financial concepts, products and services as early as possible. Children should have some understanding and practical experience in budgeting, saving, spending, banking, investing and giving. This will help them to develop a responsible attitude towards money and give them a solid foundation for making sensible financial decisions in future.

In 2016, Lagos state recognized the Monopoly Board Game as an effective tool to promote Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship. This provides us with an opportunity to establish Financial Literacy Clubs in schools across Lagos State. It is our goal to introduce financial education to at least 10,000 school children every year.
As you are aware, there is no financial education in our school curriculum; the Financial Literacy clubs would thus introduce the basic concepts of financial management to our school children through training workshops, games and hands-on peer engagement. This will give them a better understanding of money matters from a young age and help them develop into financially responsible adults.
